It’s been a few months since my last post because I’ve been undergoing a professional (and personal) transformation.
If you have watched my YouTube vlogs (https://www.youtube.com/c/RobHolcroft) you may have seen that I have spent the last two years training to be an Emmett Technique practitioner, under the guidance of incredible teachers and healers, Penny, Sue, Lesley and the man himself, Ross Emmett. On my journey, I have met a wonderful array of people, who are all talented therapists, and made great new friends. I qualified in March this year and have continued my training, undertaking the extended practitioner modules as well as joining a practice group of fellow Emmett Technique practitioners.
I first experienced the magic of Emmett technique when I was referred to physiotherapist for help with a long standing hearing issue. I have always been convinced it was a result of muscle trauma and, as every other avenue to restore my hearing had been exhausted, I decided to see a physio. As a qualified fitness instructor and posture specialist, I had a good knowledge of physiotherapy techniques and was very aware that the treatment I received in my first session wasn’t physiotherapy. The results, however, were unbelievable! In just a few minutes, the therapist had significantly increase the range of movement in my neck and released a huge amount of tension from my upper back and shoulders. When I checked my head rotation at the end of the 20 minute session, I could turn my head so far around that I felt like an owl. Astounded, I asked what she had done, as I was very aware that it wasn’t conventional physiotherapy. She explained that it was something called the Emmett Technique.
I googled it as soon as I got home and devoured everything I could find about this amazing body therapy and was hooked. I now knew that I had to know how to perform to do this, seemingly magical, technique and it just so happened that there was a course running, locally to me, that weekend! Almost as if it were meant to be. I booked on the one day, EmTech course – ‘Emmett For Friends & Family’ and the rest, as they say, is history! Eighteen months later I qualified as a practitioner and now I offer Emmett treatments from my new therapy room at Basepoint Business Centre in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire.
The joy for me is that Emmett Technique unifies my work as a body and mind therapist. Over the last two decades of working with people on a physical and psychological level, it became blatantly clear that the mind and body are one system. You cannot alter one without it directly affecting the other. In my experience, physical symptoms are often the body’s expression of deeper emotional issues. For example, someone who regularly suffers with a sore throat might be struggling to voice an opinion or say something that has to be said. I also have no doubt that muscle holds emotional upset and trauma. Just as someone physically relaxes after releasing emotion, I have experienced many clients crying after releasing muscle tension. Emmett Technique recognises this and integrates the treatment of mind and body during a session. This is why so many clients say that they feel lighter and freer afterwards.
So what is Emmett Technique? Ross Emmett, the creator of this technique, describes it as the Chameleon Approach to Body Therapies. He explains that the EMMETT Technique is an amazingly gentle, safe and simple to apply muscle release therapy. It is used to address pain and discomfort, improve body movement, restore a positive emotional state and improve the quality of life. The process involves application of light pressure at specific points. These can be in sequences that enable gentle release for many common conditions. Since practicing Emmett Technique, I have had success treating a variety of issues, including backache, plantar fasciitis, RSI, whiplash, achilles tendinitis, bad knees, sciatica, poor balance, shoulder tension and pain, restriction of movement and many other conditions. Although everyone responds in their own way to treatment, clients commonly refer to their experience of the technique as “like magic” and “freeing”. There are times that it still amazes me at how effective Emmett is and the lasting effects, once the issue has been resolved. As a posture specialist and fan of puzzles, I love helping discover what may have caused the issue in the first place and, once I’ve got to the potential root of the problem, give advice on changing habits to prevent the issue returning.
